They had intended to just put out \u201ca few books on the side at random,\u201d but instead built a publishing giant, presenting many great names, such as James Joyce, James Faulkner, Isak Dinesen, Andr\u00e9 Malraux, Robert Graves, John O\u2019Hara, Sinclair Lewis, Robert Penn Warren, and successful titles, like <em>Ulysses, Ellison\u2019s Invisible Man, The Cat in the Hat and, The Iceman Cometh,<\/em> as well as many classic reprints.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indentpara\">By our count, David designed 31 jackets or covers for Random House (including three for Modern Library and two for Modern Library paperbacks) between 1955 and 1961. Among them is one cultural touchstone for the era, Truman Capote\u2019s 1958 novel, <em>Breakfast at Tiffany\u2019s,<\/em> as seen in Tom Ford\u2019s film, <em>A Single Man,<\/em> made 2009, but set in a meticulously recreated early 1960s Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<div class=\"mt-3 mb-3\"><div class=\"rl-gallery-container rl-loading\" id=\"rl-gallery-container-1\" data-gallery_id=\"2465\"> <div \u201cTony\u201d Wimpfheimer, Regina Spirito and \u201cRuth K.\u201d Some commissions came with technical limitations, due to size or budget, or with very specific directives as to color and writing style, due to the desires of the editors. For instance, <em>Breakfast at Tiffany\u2019s<\/em> came with a sketch by Bennett Cerf, a color swatch and a request for \u201cstrong Bodoni\u201d lettering.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--expands-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000004f00000000000000000_2449\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000004f00000000000000000_2449-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000004f00000000000000000_2449-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">Notes from Regina Spirito and Ruth K. in <a href=\"https:\/\/archivesspace.rit.edu\/repositories\/3\/resources\/977\">Ismar David papers, box 5, folder 119, Cary Graphic Arts Collection, RIT.<\/a><\/span> Turn-around time for a sketch was usually 10\u201314 days, although rush jobs came in, too.
