She was highly regarded by her colleagues, who acknowledged her as an innovative and demanding boss, and as a mentor as well. She was one of the first two women to be inducted into Boston\u2019s Society of Printers and served as its president.<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--expands-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"1\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000004f00000000000000000_3190\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000004f00000000000000000_3190-1\">1<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000004f00000000000000000_3190-1\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"1\">Nicas, Jack, ,em. Dwiggins Award, as someone who \u201chas given \u2018something extra\u2019 to her job \u2026 in terms of talent, brilliance, integrity, devotion, or helpfulness to others.\u201d<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--expands-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"2\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000004f00000000000000000_3190\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000004f00000000000000000_3190-2\">2<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000004f00000000000000000_3190-2\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"2\">Description of the Dwiggins Award from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbboston.org\/about-us\/w-a-dwiggins-award\/\">Bookbuilders of Boston<\/a> <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"indentpara\">In 1957 Cahir married Henry Thoma, who had joined Houghton Mifflin in 1946 as an editor and served as chief of its college textbook division from 1963 until he retired in 1974. He was known as an \u201ceditor\u2019s editor who set standards of excellence that his successors are constantly challenged to emulate.\u201d<sup class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote modern-footnotes-footnote--expands-on-desktop \" data-mfn=\"3\" data-mfn-post-scope=\"00000000000004f00000000000000000_3190\"><a href=\"javascript:void(0)\"  role=\"button\" aria-pressed=\"false\" aria-describedby=\"mfn-content-00000000000004f00000000000000000_3190-3\">3<\/a><\/sup><span id=\"mfn-content-00000000000004f00000000000000000_3190-3\" role=\"tooltip\" class=\"modern-footnotes-footnote__note\" tabindex=\"0\" data-mfn=\"3\">Harold T. Miller quoted in the Boston Globe, July 20, 1983<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"indentpara\">Ismar David worked with Patricia Cahir and Henry Thoma, beginning in 1957. Their first project was <a href=\" https:\/\/www.ismardavidarchive.org\/work\/?s=%22A+Survey+of+European+Civilization%22 \"><em>A Survey of European Civilization<\/em><\/a>. They worked closely, planning which historical motifs to use for the thirteen chapter openings for the book and consulting on technical details. Mrs. Thoma counted herself \u201cpractically breathless in anticipation of receiving your sketches soon. In fact they will be transmitted to the printer as is and those suggestions in typography you sent will be incorporated with the text. Ismar David wrote to Pat Thoma, \u201cMy greetings to your husband and kind regards to you both.
