{"id":797,"date":"2020-04-26T18:09:58","date_gmt":"2020-04-26T18:09:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ismardavidarchive.org\/indexofnames\/?p=797"},"modified":"2021-01-01T19:55:48","modified_gmt":"2021-01-01T19:55:48","slug":"charming-drawings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ismardavidarchive.org\/indexofnames\/charming-drawings\/","title":{"rendered":"Postcard from Gabi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-2\"><em>Gabriella Rosenthal, 1913\u20131975, Israeli illustrator, cartoonist, author, art teacher, and tour guide.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"smallcaps\">Munich born Gabriella Rosenthal<\/span> emigrated to Palestine in 1935 with her husband at that time, Schalom Ben-Chorin, a distant cousin of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ismardavidarchive.org\/indexofnames\/bella-thannhauser-wirz\/\">Bella Thannhauser Wirz<\/a>. Her humane and witty watercolor and ink work appeared weekly (Fridays) in the Palestine, now Jerusalem, Post under the rubric <em>Palestine People.<\/em> She illustrated several books and a Megillat Esther and has written and published in four languages: English, German, Arabic and Hebrew.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indentpara\"> Gabi posted this card on December 29, 1950, while on vacation in Lugano, Switzerland. (Minus that I must know perhaps what it costs.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"indentpara\">Here, even the sausages wear little ballet skirts and silk sashes around their enormous waists. And the sparrows eat only what comes from pure buttercake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indentpara\">[The little bird says, \u201cPooh! Blue Band.\u201d (Blue Band was an Israeli margarine brand.)] <\/p>\n<p class=\"indentpara\">But I&#8217;m nevertheless coming back soon to this shitty home and am already looking forward to when the two of us, in yellow silk, will be complaining in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ismardavidarchive.org\/indexofnames\/cafe-hermon\/\">Hermon<\/a> [caf\u00e9 in the Rosh Rehavia neighborhood of Jerusalem] on the Medine [in Israel].
